Description:

This teaching unit represents a completely revised, up-dated and expanded set of images from the previous GTP Pancreatitis unit. The images illustrate the physiology and pathophysiology of pancreatic function and the causes, diagnosis and management of acute and chronic pancreatitis. The outstanding photographs, micrographs, illustrations and movies explain important concepts in our understanding of how the pancreas functions and serve to add a scientific basis to the treatment of inflammatory and other conditions affecting this vital organ. Images, including graphic representations of data from key studies, are accompanied by explanatory legends that contain recent literature citations, thereby providing a unique teaching and self-educational resource. The senior author, Fred Gorelick, MD, is Professor of Medicine and Cell Biology, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT.

GTP Pancreatic Physiology and Pancreatitis is separated into the following sections: Part I: Pancreatic Physiology and Biology I; Part II: Pancreatic Physiology and Biology II; Part III: Acute Pancreatitis I; Part IV: Acute Pancreatitis II; Part V: Chronic Pancreatitis; Part VI: Pancreatic Disease Cases including Acute Pancreatitis, Chronic Pancreatitis, and Pancreatic Neoplasms. Moreover, two movies are included: (1) Normal ERCP and (2) ERCP with papillotomy and extraction of common duct stones.

Senior Author:

Fred Gorelick, MD is Professor of Medicine (Digestive Diseases) and Cell Biology at Yale University School of Medicine and VA Connecticut in West Haven, CT. Dr. Gorelick studies the mechanisms of pathologic zymogen activation in the pancreatic acinar cell, cell signaling, and intracellular targeting and is supported by grants from the Department of Veterans Affairs and National Institutes of Health.

Co-Authors:

Lars Fischer, MD is a surgical trainee at Chirurgische Universita®tsklinik, Heidelberg, Germany. The focus of his scientific work concerns the effects of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase on pancreatitis and calcium signaling in pancreatic acinar cells.

Anil Nagar, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine (Digestive Diseases) at Yale University School of Medicine and VA Connecticut in West Haven, CT. Dr. Nagar is interested in clinical studies that examine the value of interventions for detecting and treating GI diseases.

Stephen Pandol, MD is Professor of Medicine (Gastroenterology) at UCLA and the Greater Los Angeles Veterans Health Care System. Dr. Pandol studies the cellular mechanisms of pancreatitis and is particularly interested in the role of inflammation and the regulation of cell death and cell signaling. Dr. Pandolís research is supported by grants from the Department of Veterans Affairs and NIH.

Guillermo Robles-Diaz, MD is a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine and Experimental Medicine at Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, Mexico City. Dr. Robles-Diaz studies the factors that affect the prognosis of acute pancreatitis and the treatment of chronic pancreatitis.

Akihiko Sato, MD is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology, Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine, Sendai, Japan. He is interested in the patho-physiology of acute pancreatitis.

Mark Topazian, MD is Associate Professor (Digestive Diseases) of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Dr. Topazian studies clinical issues related to the diagnosis of pancreatic and biliary tract disease by clinical and imaging modalities.
