Description:

This GTP unit consists of more than 314 images that review advances in molecular biology and genetics, and apply these concepts to understanding the epidemiology, pathogenesis, molecular mechanisms and treatment of gastrointestinal and liver diseases that have a defined genetic basis. Among other methods, this multimedia unit employs animated cartoons to explain complex biological phenomena and describe their relation to disease. These include signaling cascades leading to inflammation, cell proliferation and apoptosis. Specific disorders are used in the form of case histories to exemplify how hereditary and acquired genetic changes result in disease. Disorders that are considered in this context include cystic fibrosis, hemochromatosis, α-1 antitrypsin deficiency, Wilsonís disease, colon cancer, Crohnís disease, hereditary pancreatitis and Barrettís esophagus.
